One of the first questions expectant parents ask me is, “When should we schedule newborn photos?”
The answer depends on the kind of images you love. If you’re hoping for sleepy, gently posed portraits of your baby, the first couple of weeks are usually ideal. If you’re drawn to natural photos of your family together at home, you have more flexibility.
I’m Tina, a Seattle-area newborn photographer, and I’ve photographed more than 1,500 babies. Here’s how I help families choose a time that feels right for them.
The best age for posed newborn photos
For posed studio newborn photography, I typically plan sessions when babies are about 8 to 14 days old. At this stage, many babies are still especially sleepy and comfortable being gently wrapped, which works beautifully for the simple, curled-up portraits you may have seen in my portfolio.
My posed newborn sessions take place in my Puyallup studio. I provide wraps, accessories, and neutral styling, and I allow plenty of time for feeding, changing, and soothing. Your baby sets the pace.
That 8-to-14-day window is a planning guide, not a deadline you have to worry about meeting perfectly. Birth dates change, and every baby is different.
The best age for in-home newborn photos
For in-home lifestyle newborn photography, I usually photograph families within their baby’s first month. These sessions focus on connection: how you hold your baby, the way a sibling leans in for a closer look, and the little details of life together at home.
Because lifestyle sessions don’t depend on sleepy, posed images, we have more room to choose a date that works for your family. I travel to homes in Seattle and surrounding areas, so you can stay in a familiar space while I guide you through the photographs.
If you love images that include your nursery, your pets, or the everyday feeling of bringing your baby home, an in-home session may be the right fit.
Is three or four weeks too late for newborn photos?
No. Your baby is still wonderfully little, and there is so much worth remembering at three or four weeks.
The photographs may look different from those taken in a baby’s first days. An older baby might spend more time awake, stretch out, or look around during the session. Those expressions can become some of your favorite images.
If your baby has already arrived and you haven’t booked, please reach out. Tell me your baby’s age and the kinds of photographs you want, and I can help you choose the session that makes the most sense.
When should you book your photographer?
I recommend getting in touch during your second trimester, especially if you have your heart set on a posed studio session. We can plan around your due date, talk about whether you prefer studio or in-home photographs, and adjust the session date after your baby arrives.
You don’t need to know exactly when your baby will be born. No one does! Booking ahead simply gives us time to make a plan before those busy first weeks.
How do you decide which timing is right for you?
Think first about the images you want:
- Sleepy portraits of your baby with simple wraps and styling: Ask about a posed studio session in the first couple of weeks.
- Natural photographs with parents, siblings, and pets at home: Consider an in-home lifestyle session during the first month.
- Both baby portraits and relaxed family photographs: Ask me about the studio session that combines posed and lifestyle images.
The best age for newborn photos is the age that allows us to capture what matters most to your family. You don’t have to force a session into a date that doesn’t feel manageable.
If you’re looking for newborn photography in Seattle, I’d love to hear when your baby is due—or when they arrived—and what you hope these photographs will help you remember. Explore my newborn sessions or contact me to start planning.
